FRI, JAN 30 – TEDX AUGUSTA … We’re at TEDx this morning! Call out to our great volunteers! Hugs to Helms College culinary students, JandL Farm & Stables, Fermdamentals of Aiken and Culinary Cuisine of Grovetown for cooking up the morning snacks And love to our friends at A&D Carpets and Hardwoods for donating a big, round, red rug for the stage! What a wonderful event this has been!

MON, FEB 2 – WTF* LOCAL FOOD FILM & MEDIA SERIES … Join us for a monthly media showing of the deeply significant and often alarming issues facing our modern food culture. The series will be “Stone Soup” style … you bring a seasonal ingredient; we’ll throw it in the pot and eat together. First up: an audio lecture on “glyphosate” from a seasoned, activist farmer. Hugs to AGL volunteer. This event will be held at the GROW Harrisburg Local Foods Classroom at 1808 Broad Street, across from the Kroc Center. Starts at 5:30pm. Free. *WTF = We Trust (our) Farmers.

THU, FEB 12 VEGGIE FERMENTATION WORKSHOP
Fermdamental’s Danielle Shelton will join us on Thursday evening, February 12, to teach a Vegetable Fermentation workshop. This is a hands-on event, and everyone will take home a jar or two of sauer kraut. Of course, sampling different kinds of veggie ferments is all part of the fun. Participants will also receive handouts with a few different fermentation recipes. One jar of kraut is included in the price for the class; additional jars (if there are any) will be an additional $5 per jar. The workshop will take place from 5:30 -7:00 pm, at the GROW Harrisburg Local Foods Classroom (1808 Broad Street) Augusta, across from the Kroc Center. Tickets are available through this on-line market, or email kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

TUES, FEB 17 – EHS STEPS INTO WELLNESS: HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIRALG will host a seasonal foods education booth at Evans High School for CCBOE employees. We’d love a volunteer or two to help, especially to promote the Evans Towne Farmers Market. We’ve filled all our volunteer slots! Thank you!!!

MON, FEB 23- APARTMENT AQUAPONICS WORKSHOP … Join David Young for another hands-on aquaponics workshop, this one tailored for urban gardens on a very tight budget and with very small spaces! The workshop is 5:30pm-7pm. For just $5, everyone goes home with a small fish farm for herbs. Held at the GROW Harrisburg Local Foods Classroom, 1808 Broad Street, Augusta. SAT, MAR 14 – FARM TOUR & WORKSHOP AT ADDERSON’S FRESH PRODUCE … One of the CSRA’s most beloved organic veggie farms is planning an educational farm tour and workshop in mid-March, and Augusta Locally Grown will be helping! TUE, MAR 17 – OPENING DAY AT THE VEGGIE TRUCK FARMERS MARKET … “Dark Leafy Green St. Patty’s Market Party” is what we’re calling our opening day festivities this season. Come support these all-local, all-naturally-grown farmers and other vendors. And yes! We’ll be doubling SNAP/EBT again this year. The market is in Harrisburg, across from the Kroc Center, every Tuesday, 4:30pm-7pm, through October. Volunteer cooking demo instructors are always needed!

WED-THUR, MAR 18-19 – THE GEORGIA DIETETICS CONFERENCE will be held in Augusta this year. ALG will provide an educational booth on local foods. Volunteers will be needed on both days! Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to help.

Good Morning and Happy Friday.
Isn’t it nice to be able to shop from the comfort of your home? I hope you enjoy the offerings this week.
Four Mile Farm is taking 8 lambs to the processor so there will be more lamb offerings on the market, Cedar Rock Dairy currently has ground lamb, organ meats and loin chops available as well as leg of lamb. If you don’t see it listed on the market, e-mail me and we can hopefully, get what you are looking for.
As another holiday approaches, we have a lovely selection of gift ideas from gift certificates to gift boxes to cookie bouquets. Give the gift of clean living to someone you love. (Secret, you don’t have to wait for a holiday)
If you have not tried the Zesty Italian Sausage from Joyful Noise Acres Farm, give it a try. It made a great soup:
1 lb. browned Italian sausage
1 large can diced tomatoes
3 cloves, minced garlic
2 cups cooked garbanzo beans
8 stems and leaves Swiss Chard, chopped
Pepper to taste.
Once the sausage is browned, sauté in the garlic to release the flavor. Add remaining ingredients and let simmer about 15 minutes. Easy and delicious. Add other vegetables as desired.
A new shipment of butter arrived Wednesday. We have unsalted and salted and it is the best yet. Don’t forget to pick up a tub on Wednesday.

We take checks, cash, credit card and Dwolla

If you are planning to pay using Dwolla please make sure your deposit includes the 25 cents fee. For example, if your order total is $22.50 make your deposit for $22.75.

Do you feel the love? Do you feel like our little local market of love is like being home, going home, feeling at home?

I learned, a very long time ago, that home is wherever you feel the love. Family, friends, a place, a time…If it brings love to your heart, well, then you ARE home.

I get to see so much, on so many levels, at this market. I see my own work, I see the work of my hard working assistants, Mark and Charlene. The hard work of each vendor, in this market. The love and the care that they each put into their work, their products, their customer base. The dedicated hours that the YMCA gives us. And, the work of you, our customers, of this little local market of love. Without you, where would the love be?

Each week, I watch as friendships happen, as trust between vendors and customers, builds. As trust in this market continues to go, full steam ahead. I get to chat at the market, greet vendors and customers, share tidbits of conversation, answer questions, and hopefully bring a bit of sunshine and song to everyone I happen to come into contact with, each week.

Thank you, to each customer, vendor, assistant manager, YMCA staff, for making this market feel like home, each week.

Each of you is very important….I thank you, I love you, and I love that together, we build this little market that has become our home…

New Vendor: Cottage Garden Teas

I am very excited to welcome Tara Wendler of Cottage Garden Teas www.georgiaorganicteas.com to our family of vendors! They are located in Buford, GA.

Cottage Garden Teas come from all over the world – India, China, Japan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, South Africa. They use carefully selected distributors who monitor the trade practices and ethical standards of the tea.

The entire tea business is a “clean” industry. Many teas that Cottage Garden Teas carry are Certified Organic and the ones that are not are typically grown at high elevations where pesticides are not needed or used. Cottage Garden Teas’ distributors belong to associations which ensure ethical and clean standards for farming. They are confident that their teas are the highest, cleanest quality.

Tara was introduced to the world of tea after she had been let down by the medical community. She and her family now enjoy all of the benefits tea has to offer and want you to experience them as well.

She offers over 130 varieties but I have asked her to only list her most popular. Feel free to contact her if you are interested in a tea that is not currently listed and she will add to our market.

Far East Herb Company is closing down

Mona from Far East Herb Company has made the difficult decision to close down her business. After this week the medicinal herbs will no longer be available on the website.

If you’ve enjoyed using their products please consider purchasing them this week.

We wish Mona good luck in her future endeavors!

No packing is involved just need someone to be there to assist other members. You are welcome to bring your kids as long as they are supervised. NEW Growing Season Update January

Spinach is growing and waiting for good weather to be planted out into the hoop-houses. Planted greens are waiting for sunny longer days. Seeds are ordered and many seeds are back ordered. Heaters are being installed, buildings are being cleaned and organized so when we get busy we can find what we need when we need it. It is now time to look at the biological insects to see what we need. Two years ago we lost one long row of kale due to the cabbage loopers, the butterflies may be pretty but the caterpillars are ferociously hunger for kale. Last year we released some microscopic wasps that loved eating their eggs and the damage was minimum. I love those tiny insects. They are the size of pin head and have an huge appetite for eggs.
