Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Nov 15 2014


We’re heading into the first cold snap of the winter this week, with steady -5 and lower, which indeed is below normal for this time of year. Small consolation!

Veggie greens are doing fine in the greenhouse and root crops and squashes are in storage. All good. Meat freezers are well stocked, my pigs are now 200lb and will be going to the butcher in early December. One is spoken for already, but I will make sides available.

The Permaculture Teacher Training course last week was an uplifting experience, hanging out with 20 students of all ages, 24 to 64. We were hosted in a 16 yr old co-housing community in Ann Arbor MI. All of us are inspired to do what we can to rectify, mitigate, restore the ecological damage being done to the earth, life support system for all of us. Permaculture is a philosophy, movement and design system for living well within the earth’s means, as tho we intended to stay. See www.permacultureactivist.org for lots of links and info.

To which my local organic small grains farmer friend (who supplies all the grain for my chickens and pigs), replied about wheat: “But we need to add to this the fact that nearly every acre in Ontario has 1 to 2 applications of a fungicide as well (mainly Folicur). One app before heading and one application after heading. Western Canada I am told sprays their wheat on average 6 times per crop. (Round-up pre-plant burnoff, several insecticide passes for grasshoppers, several fungicide passes and then as this article states desiccant.” Makes me really not want to eat wheat anything. At least I can buy organic flour or grain and mill my own.

Callidora Farms is owned and managed by Raul and Genel Rivera (The Farmers). Farming is new to them, but it has been in Raul’s heart since his childhood days. In 2008, Raul began searching for the perfect land to purchase and start farming. After 5 years of searching, he finally found the perfect 71-acre plot in historical Madison, GA where he and his family could live the dream of operating a sustainable farm. Soon after buying the land, The Farmers realized that sustainable farming is both a way of life and a business. Well…isn’t this market JUST what you needed? I know it’s what I need, and it makes me so happy to always know that I have this little local market of love to fall back on, each and every week!

I had a jam packed day, today…I am in charge of Santa Land, along with one of this market’s vendors, Dave Smith, of Freshwater Farms, and I am on the planning committee of the Monument Square District’s Downtown Christmas Gala. Both are huge events. I am front and center in both. It gets very tiring, right about now, to make sure it is all coming together. Not only do I oversee both of these special events, but I also have my shop, and a little thing called, Holiday In The City, down in Springfield, coming up. Crazy. Not to mention my everyday Cosmic obligations.

I was driving home, tonight, cold, in need of food, and a warming glass of wine. I drove past a couple of our very lit up big box stores, thankful that we do have them but also extremely happy that my shopping was done, online, with ease, at this little local market of love.

I love what we represent, I love the local nutrition, the low cost of this locally grown food, I love the support from this community, and I love being a part of it all!!

Cedar Grove Farm:  Important info: official ending of CSA


Hello everyone,

Despite the recent update in early November to continue the CSA through the winter, we have chosen to end the CSA for the year. An explanation of how we came to this decision follows along with details about how we are moving forward with remaining balances.

We started our CSA several years ago with the intention of reaching people beyond the farmer’s market and generating more income for the farm. The CSA offers an investment from members early in the year that help support the farm before the growing season begins. Members invest in the farm knowing the risks and benefits involved and the many factors that can affect the harvest. Our program is set up differently than most in that members have the choice of choosing the produce they want on a weekly basis, increasing flexibility and customization. During the spring and summer seasons, this method is successful because of the amount of food we can grow. Once the colder weather sets in and the season begins to slow, this method is less advantageous. The vegetable production slows to a snails pace and our harvests for market get slimmer and slimmer.

The CSA ends officially at the end of October and we hope that our members use their remaining balance by this point. The share size options have a recommended weekly spending average that helps to keep things on track. Unfortunately this does not always happen and we continue the CSA into winter offering what we can. Since our yields are so low at this time of year, it becomes more difficult for people to use up their balance. This leaves us with the hard choice of continuing the CSA even longer or offering a refund to any member who has a remaining balance. Many members have $100-200 left in their accounts and knowing what our yields will be throughout the winter it will be hard to offer enough to affect those numbers. On the other hand, this is the time of year when the farm is generating little income and we have to survive the next three months on what we’ve made thus far. As i’m sure many of you know, farming is not a money maker. The investments we receive from the CSA in the beginning of the year help us greatly in running the farm and there is not much left at the end.

After much consideration, we have decided to end the CSA. Since a large portion of our earnings would go to refunds, we are offering another option for those who have a remaining balance. We will issue a credit for our booth at the farmer’s market for anyone with a balance that can be used until the market ends this year as well as next year’s market season. The market ends December 20th this year and begins again next April. The credit will allow you to continue eating fresh, seasonal produce and help us to successfully further our farming business. We realize this is not as convenient as a CSA and if you would prefer a check at the end of the year for your remaining balance, please contact us and let us know.

We fully appreciate all of your support now and in the past. Small, organic farms like ours couldn’t exist without you. Hope to see all of you at the Athens Farmer’s Market.

The “Cookies of the Week” have been posted from Basically Bread. This week’s cookie flavor is M & M’s. Ingredients: self-rising flour, unsalted butter, sugar, brown sugar, 2 eggs, vanilla, M&M’s. Patricia has also listed chocolate chip Amish bread and zucchini/nut bread. They all sound so good!

NOTE: These baked products are made in a private home not licensed or inspected.


PLEASE NOTE: The week of Thanksgiving, we will be having pickup on Wednesday, November 26, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, instead of on Thursday. Same time/location, just a different day.

The Cumming Harvest - Closed:  Heritage Farm Turkey Delivery


A Message from Greg of Heritage Farm.

Turkeys will be delivered on Saturday 11/22 and Monday 11/24. We will not be running on Wednesday 11/26. Saturday drops will be 11/22 and Wednesday drops will be run on Monday 11/24. If you are picking up at Peachtree Road on Saturday you can come during market from 9-12. We will also be coming by the Dunwoody drop on Saturday as well at approximately 1:45 pm. All Cumming Harvest turkeys will be delivered Saturday morning Nov 22nd. Cumming Harvest Customers will pay their balance to Suzanne at pick up. We will be delivering to all the market and drop site locations but you MUST, unless other arrangements are made, be present to get your turkey or ham. All turkeys and hams have a balance due by weight so you have to claim in person.

We invested in minimal amounts of cauliflower, russets, reds, and sweet potatoes this week. Also acquired beautiful cranberries from Oregon and the Covington yams are from NC. While doing research on yams vs. sweet potatoes, I happened on info that the Covington Yams from NC are used to produce Covington Gourmet Vodka for sale in NC liquor stores. Their marketing byline? “Ending America’s dependence on foreign vodka”. Differences between sweet potatoes and yams? EXCERPT: “A true yam is… generally imported to America from the Caribbean. It is rough and scaly and very low in beta carotene.” Also BEAUTIFUL Seminole Pumpkins available in good variety of sizes! Shop early as all these items will go fast.

This one never fails to please my guests and doesn’t have to be a side dish… Roasted Butternut Squash, Rosemary, and Garlic Lasagne. If you want a version to print from Cook’s Illustrated that has a photo, then here is my copy.

Pam Lunn of The Dancing Goat has graciously provided this explanation: “While we drink and eat all our products in our household, and have for the past 14 years, our licensing from the State of Florida (FDACS #1280 Dancing Goat) requires that we sell for the intent of pet consumption only. Any attempt to engage in conversations regarding the consumption by humans could jeopardize our licensing. Per Florida Law, it is illegal to sell raw milk/products for the intent of human consumption. Our milk products / cheeses are all raw and our free range eggs are not graded or washed in a chemical solution. We provide you with products produced by our stock the way Mother Nature delivered them.” NOTE FROM MKT MGR: ALL of our egg providers are required to provide this labelling.
